The areas of operation for a transistor switch are known as the Saturation Region and the Cut-off Region. The biasing is arranged to operate on regions of the output curves if the circuit uses the transistor as a switch. The diagrams below illustrate the output curves which dictate the range of collector-emitter voltage Vce for variations in collector current, Ic. There are input, output and transfer characteristic curves and the output characteristic curve being the most useful of a BJT. The function of BJT determines the device’s characteristic curves when used in any circuits. Transistor switches offer lower cost and substantial reliability over conventional mechanical relays. The ability to exert control over a much larger flow of electrons through the collector is possible with a relatively small flow of electrons sent through the base of the transistor. It can be used as a sort of current-controlled switch because s transistor’s collector current is proportionally limited by its base current. Using a computer’s parallel port to turn some external device ON is a typical example. ![]() The ability for bipolar transistors to turn things ON and OFF is one of the less known uses while transistors have several uses.
